Method

Twelve fourth-year nursing students who had done both clinical placements and web-based simulation answered a seven-item open questionnaire; the transcripts were compared through focus-group content analysis.

Findings

Clinical practice built critical thinking through direct observation of patients and the hospital environment but offered few chances to perform; web-based simulation built confidence and theory through repetition but narrowed feedback and the range of possible interventions.
